📅 What is the Solunar Theory?
The Solunar Theory, developed by John Alden Knight in 1926, holds that fish and wildlife activity is influenced by the moon’s position relative to Earth. Major periods (2 per day, ~2 hrs each) occur when the moon is directly overhead or underfoot. Minor periods (2 per day, ~1 hr each) occur at moonrise and moonset. Fish feeding activity peaks during these windows.

Early morning (30 minutes before sunrise to 2 hours after) is the single best time for most freshwater species. Light is low, water is cooler, and fish are actively feeding near the surface. Late evening (2 hours before sunset to sunset) is a close second. Midday in summer is generally the worst time.
Does moon phase really affect fishing? ▼
Yes — the moon influences tidal movements in saltwater and affects fish feeding behavior in freshwater. Full and new moons create stronger tidal forces and are associated with peak feeding activity. Solunar periods (when the moon is overhead or underfoot) consistently produce better fishing than random times of day.
Is fishing better before or after a storm? ▼
Before a storm — the dropping barometric pressure triggers a feeding frenzy as fish sense the pressure change and feed aggressively before the storm hits. The 2–4 hours before a storm are often the best fishing of the week. After a storm, fish are sluggish and feeding slows dramatically for 12–24 hours.
What water temperature is best for bass fishing? ▼
Bass are most active between 65°F and 75°F. This range produces the most aggressive feeding, topwater action, and cover all depths. Below 50°F, bass become lethargic and require slow presentations. Above 85°F, bass retreat to deep, cool water and feed primarily at night.
Does fishing in the rain work? ▼
Light rain is excellent for fishing — it oxygenates surface water, reduces light penetration that makes fish cautious, and washes insects and baitfish into the water. Bass, trout, and panfish are noticeably more active in light rain. Heavy thunderstorms are dangerous and fishing should stop for safety.
